41 – Why an Acoustic Barrier South of the 20?

MTQ recommended sound barriers in 1987, 2010 and NOW

Installing an acoustic barrier will have a considerable effect for residents on their quality of life

We have already cited the two MTQ sound level studies, and some of the numerous reports from the DSP and the WHO.

The MTQ proposes to reduce the noise annoyance felt by residents with acoustic barriers. Depending on the available space, the acoustic barrier can consist of a mound, an acoustic wall or a combination of both.

According to the following table (MTQ 2010), the noise reduction planned following the construction of sound barriers will be significant: between 7 and 13 dBA.

The INSPQ (2018) states that a noise difference is noticeable from 3 dBA. Installing an acoustic barrier will therefore have a considerable effect for residents on their quality of life. Follow this link to hear the difference.

Anticipated reduction in noise levels following the installation of an acoustic barrier

The MTQ 2010 concludes that the level of noise annoyance, which is high at the moment, will be low everywhere south of the A-20 following the installation of the acoustic barriers:

In conclusion: The MTQ has been anticipating since 1987 to solve the problem of noise pollution south of the A-20 by means of an acoustic barrier because it is the best known solution for bringing an acceptable quality of life to the 4,500 people living near highway 20 south.

Also, this solution is 75% funded by the MTQ, which is an exceptional offer compared to the 50% offered to other cities in Quebec.
